Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, is a metabolic disorder which leads to high sugar (glucose) levels in the bloodstream. Like all bad things, it also comes in three forms.

Type 1 Diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin. As a result, the glucose in the blood fails to enter the cells, leading to high blood-sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes is somewhat rare, since only 10% of the total diabetic patients suffer from Type 1 Diabetes. It is a lifelong disease in which the patient has to take regular insulin injections in order to compensate for the pancreatic failure in producing the same. This type of diabetes usually begins during teenage years, or at the onset of adulthood.

Type 2 Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the cells of the body become resistant to insulin, thereby causing high levels of glucose in the blood stream. Type 2 diabetes is more common, and occurs during the later stages of life, mostly due to excessive weight and unhealthy lifestyle choices.

In most cases, type 2 diabetes lasts for the lifetime, but some patients have managed to completely get rid of the symptoms with a proper diet and a regular exercise routine.

Gestational Diabetes

This type of diabetes affect pregnant females. Glucose levels can be high in the blood during pregnancy, and sometimes the body is not able to produce enough insulin to transport all of the insulin.

It is very important to control the blood-sugar levels during pregnancy, or else it can lead to a number of complications during childbirth, including the child being bigger than he/she should be.

In all three types of diabetes, care should be taken that the blood-sugar levels don’t fall beneath the normal levels (a condition known as hypoglycemia), since that can lead to severe repercussions. As a result, any remedies, diet plans etc. should only be adopted after taking advice of a doctor.
